ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the specific aspects in order to identify in what way they might affect productivity and to assist in the quantification of 'human capital' paybacks into building performance metrics, thereby making gains for both the sustainability and health and well-being agendas. It focuses on the paybacks from high carbon impacts on human performance such as heat, light and ventilation. The chapter explores organisational benefits of high performance workplaces there is a significant societal benefit to reducing workplace-related sickness. The People Payback Calculator has been designed to provide a method of identifying investment returns based on three key targets: reducing staff turnover and sickness absence; and increasing employee productivity. Clearly there are many factors which contribute to a happy, healthy and productive workplace. The triple gains, economic, social and environmental, have been well documented in the chapter, thereby substantiating the promotion of the built environment as one of the most influential sectors in global sustainable development.
