ABSTRACT

The man leans forward in the armchair, forearms resting on his thighs as he quietly recounts his life story. After fleeing as a refugee from an African nation fraught with conflict, he has resettled in Australia and is endeavoring to ‘make his way’ in his new country. A proud member of a persecuted ethnic group in his homeland, he nevertheless held a good job in a government department in his country of origin. With a change in the political regime he was imprisoned and tortured for his political beliefs. Having fled his homeland, he now works in a manual job, supporting his wife and two young children. One of his children has just died from an illness. He is grieving . . .
