ABSTRACT

People live in a time of growing social and economic inequality which is associated with a complicated and multifaceted crisis of housing. Taking this crisis as its springboard, this chapter introduces a movement which attempts to create qualitatively different and better homes, neighbourhoods and communities. The movement is known as 'collaborative housing', or 'cohousing', and the quotations above come from members of this movement. The chapter suggests that cohousing offers a viable alternative housing model based on ideas about sharing, which is of particular relevance in the current socio-economic context of neoliberalism. The chapter discusses the housing crisis in the UK and introduces cohousing and to examine some of the ways in which it seeks to facilitate a qualitatively different way of life inside the broader system of capitalism. It focuses on ideas and practices of 'sharing', a concept that informs cohousing narratives in complex ways.
