ABSTRACT

Public opinion research on the European integration process shows the important role of value orientations and socioeconomic situation in shaping attitudes towards European integration process. Recent research also has evidence for the effect of the national economic context on citizen support for the EU. Using hierarchical linear models with ESS data we examined how human values based on Schwartz’s approach and the subjective economic situation determine attitudes toward European integration before and during the economic crisis in 2006 and 2008. The results prove an attenuated effect of unemployment rates on human capital and a moderating effect of economic growth on human values – security and universalism – and citizen support.
