ABSTRACT

Female and male candidates are stereotyped as competent in handling distinct policy issues due to gender roles. However, for a Latina candidate who is female and of a different ethnicity, it is not evident if the same stereotypes hold. I address this gap using data from an online experimental survey. First, I examine what policy issues respondents perceive a Latina candidate as competent in handling. Second, I test if a difference exists between how Latino and non-Latino respondents stereotype her. Regarding policy issue stereotypes, results are mixed but I do find that Latino respondents stereotype her more favorably than non-Latinos.
