ABSTRACT

After many years of intense publicity about the hazards of smoking cigarettes, it is generally believed that every teenager and adult in the US knows that smoking is hazardous to one’s health. Perhaps the best known empirical demonstration of this ‘fact’ comes from research by Viscusi on perceptions of risks from smoking as reported in several articles (Viscusi, 1990; 1991; 1998) and a book (Viscusi, 1992).
