ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how gender influences the migration experience. It is clear that Yucatecan men and women in Dallas operate in distinctive social spheres and that their daily lives differ in many ways. This is not, I suggest, solely an adaptation to migration. In Kaal as well as in Dallas, men and women live a gendered existence that dictates the kind of work they do, the places they go, and the appropriate activities they undertake. To understand the role of gender in Dallas, then, it is necessary to also understand the Kaal context.
