ABSTRACT

It’s one thing to be a talented performer or singer/songwriter; it’s anotherthing to know how to build a career. In this chapter, we look at a group ofintermediaries-the professionals who represent talent-who can help to make a great performer a major star. These include booking agents, personal managers, and business managers. Each plays a unique role that changes over the course of an artist’s career. They are generally the source of employment, image making, record deals, and endorsements. Good intermediaries can nurture talent and help new artists avoid bad decisions that can haunt them for years to come.
