Introduction

Islam, as with any other religion, can be examined from a variety of angles. For instance, it can be studied as a sacred tradition with its distinct mythology, history, sacred figures, sacred landscape, sacred time, and ethical and moral values, as well as with its peculiar vision of the cosmos. This approach is characteristic of the discipline known as “history of religions,” which is being taught in many colleges and universities across North America.
