ABSTRACT
From about 4,000 years ago, as we saw in Chapter 12, New World trade networks became more extensive in response to the growing demand for prestige goods. Hand in hand with material exchange went an exchange of ideas, both practical (for example, technology associated with food production) and ideological. Changes that took place within some groups resulted in an increase in wealth, status, and control for those in power.
