ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the state of the golf industry in North America, with particular emphasis on Canada and the United States. First, the socioeconomic impact of golf is examined through its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), the workforce, and tourism dollars, as well as through the charitable causes and social programmes it supports. Second, we examine the state of golf facilities, and initiatives that courses are undertaking to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. Third, the behaviour of golf consumers is analysed, including participation trends, and social media and technology usage among golfers. Last, like any sport, golf must adapt to remain relevant in an increasingly saturated market for sport and physical activity. Thus, we conclude by exploring variations of the sport being introduced throughout North America to maintain its viability, and activities aimed at enhancing opportunities for women in golf.
