ABSTRACT

"Studio 804 is a truly comprehensive experience where we as students are responsible for all aspects of building, from design and budgeting to pouring concrete and framing walls. Studio 804 has served as a model to many of my generation of designbuild educators. While Studio 804 represents the most extreme version of designbuild education, in the sense that the studio designs and builds every part of what are relatively complex projects, hands-on pedagogies of all kinds have the capacity to dislodge architects out of their comfort zones and to disrupt complacent attitudes about the profession. Studio 804 revealed a layer of architecture that traditional academics doesn't touch on, the real world and its variables. There are many variations on the designbuild experience, from the small-scale to the large-scale, from temporary to permanent, from low-tech to high-tech, from less than one semester long to multiple semesters spanning over several years.
