ABSTRACT

To limit the damage caused by the growth obsession of mainstream economics, it is necessary to widen the scope of property regimes and to overcome the pseudo-dichotomy between private and public property. 'Growth objection' entails social changes that are incompatible with mainstream economics, an exclusive regime of private property or government tutelage. Economics, the dignity of the individual and the energy produced by 'fire machines' were thus born simultaneously with one another. It is clear that mainstream economics is unlikely to contribute anything to the extrication of humanity from its present impasse; in fact, it bears the principal responsibility for the false turns and deviations that have come about. North American orthodoxy, reinforced by the awarding of Nobel prizes to its leading lights, seeks to follow up battles in the field of economics by heaping discredit on the above way of looking at things.
