ABSTRACT

The term ‘bhūta’ may be taken as a Sanskrit rendering of the term ‘matter’ from which the term ‘materialism’ comes into being. Everything in the material world is constituted out of four matters, and hence there is the non-existence of self. To the materialists perception is only one source of knowing and hence non-perceptible entities like self, God, heaven, etc. do not exist. Inference is not also possible since prediction about the future is not guaranteed. Hence it is better to enjoy our present life by any means. Only kāma (sexual desire) and artha (wealth) are human pursuits.
