ABSTRACT

The Mīmāṃsā is an influential school of classical Indian philosophy. Originating from an ancient tradition of scriptural exegesis, it maintained as its primary focus the Veda. The foundational text of the school (called Mīmāṃsā Sūtra) is mainly concerned with rules for systematically interpreting Vedic passages and these hermeneutic efforts led Mīmāṃsā authors to the investigation of linguistic, epistemological, exegetical, and deontic issues. The Mīmāṃsā Sūtra opens with a chapter on more general theoretical issues: the nature of dharma, the means of knowledge, and language.
