ABSTRACT

Jñānagarbha followed Bhāvaviveka’s Madhyamaka line without much variation, although his style, language and the emphasis are quite different. Jñānagarbha argues that the two truths satisfy three criteria. (1) Conventional truth is that which appears to be real, while ultimate truth is the unreality of that which appears. (2) Conventional truth is deceptive and contradictory, while ultimate truth is neither deceptive nor contradictory. (3) Conventional truth cannot be analysed since it does not withstand deductive reasoning, while ultimate truth can be analysed since it does.
