ABSTRACT

Group therapists are skilled at following group members’ narratives, hearing their stories, and discussing their issues together as they arise. In addition to following the verbal exchange, Sensorimotor Psychotherapists prioritize clients’ posture, movement, and expression as these relate to verbal content and presenting problems. These somatic elements reveal aspects of young people’s internal experience that they may not be aware of and are thus not verbalizing. When they tighten their bodies, pull back, lean forward, round their shoulders, or sit perfectly still, they are communicating meaningful information about what is going on internally (Ogden & Fisher, 2015).
