ABSTRACT

Similar to science and religion, knowledge and education are two critically important themes in philosophy. Knowledge is a salient characteristic of being human and you will want to ponder whether music represents a special kind of knowledge, distinct from other ways of knowing, whether music shares an affinity with other forms of knowledge, or is even to be considered knowledge at all. Education is a major concern in nearly all societies and, although it can be shaped by many different influences such as politics and economics, often reflects a particular philosophical stance. Whether you are involved in the education of people musically in the specific sense of music education (e.g., music in preK-12 school settings) or more broadly conceived (e.g., private piano lessons, university studio teaching, etc.), you will want to consider how your approach is grounded philosophically.
