ABSTRACT

If you have read the preceding 19 chapters, you have encountered many different views on philosophy in general, on core aspects of art (e.g., beauty, emotion, and aesthetics), and a wide range of specific music philosophies. Ideally, you have also taken the time to read some of the writings of the many philosophers cited throughout, or at least those with whose views you agree. At this point you may be feeling confused by so many choices or you may be gaining some ground on formulating your own thoughts. Either way, the purpose of this chapter is to help you express your music philosophy in as clear and unambiguous language as you can. To do this most effectively requires feedback, something a book cannot do. Therefore, it will be most helpful if you work with an instructor or friends and colleagues who can respond to your ideas with constructive feedback.
