ABSTRACT

This chapter presents two cases from China and Japan which quantify the level of energy, cost and carbon reductions that can be achieved through the implementation of technology and management strategies. Non-residential buildings account for approximately 37 per cent of the total area of buildings but consume around 70 per cent of the total energy in Shanghai. The chapter tabulates energy saving and carbon reduction by taking technical measures in the IKEA Xuhui store between 2008 and 2011. The IKEA Xuhui store is a useful case for analysing the implementation of a co-benefits approach for achieving the reduction of energy consumption, carbon emissions and energy costs in the building sector. With an increasing demand for energy conservation and environmental solutions in Japan, especially after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, Yokohama is promoting district heating and cooling and is actively pursuing widespread application of these systems.
