ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a qualitative analysis of the implementation of these two approaches and the co-benefits that resulted. It focuses on the empirical practice made in Greater Yogyakarta, an urban agglomeration within the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province (YSR). A series of in-depth interviews with several stakeholders in Greater Yogyakarta, namely the Transportation Agency of YSR, public transportation operator companies (PT-JTT or Jogja Tugu Trans Ltd) and the Greater Yogyakarta Joint Secretariat (Sekber Kartamantul), were conducted between September 2013 and February 2014. Referring to the quality spectrum of public road transport, the Trans-Jogja system can be categorized as a Bus Rapid Transit-lite system which runs without a segregated right-of-way. Further roll-out of bicycle routes and parking facilities near to Trans-Jogja's shelters could be among these indicators. The larger the shift from the aforementioned competing modes, the larger the impact of any technological changes taking place as part of Trans-Jogja.
