ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the importance of location; empirical research papers in the field of study; important factors and forces arising from location; and a description of the differences between urban and rural firms. It reviews the different relevant theories which relate location to performance and internationalization. These include two types: relevant regional development theories and relevant International Business theories. The chapter includes a discussion about other important factors and issues regarding location and its impact on different outcomes. Those issues are: the eagerness of entrepreneurs to operating in familiar places; the benefits of 'staying long'; the liability of outsidership; regional embeddedness and opportunity identification; gaining experiences through chain operation in allocation; resource acquisition and mobilization; and location and institutional framework. Location is a very important factor for domestic as well as international entrepreneurship activities. Location has a vital role to play in the process of international entrepreneurship activities by influencing the roles of a few important forces and factors.
