ABSTRACT

There is a well-developed academic interest in how music is geographical and Johansson and Bell (2007) provides a range of examples. Studies include the way music is linked to space and place, how music has geographical roots and the routes music takes around the world. While definitions of culture are diverse and complex, the importance of place and identity, the relationships between the local and the global and the links between culture and economy have all been explored from a geographical standpoint (Mitchell 2000). The following paragraphs provide a brief overview of some relevant literature, situated within the field of cultural geography.
