ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues related to cyberbullying with a focus on the role parents play in preventing and responding to cyberbullying. It presents definitions and forms of cyberbullying, consider adolescents' difficulty in disclosing cyber victimization experiences, reviews common risk factors for and consequences of cyber victimization, and explore the important role parents play in preventing and responding to cyber victimization. Specific family characteristics appear to predict cyber victimization. Given research on the relation between family factors and cyber victimization, it is clear that parents are in a crucial position for stemming cyberbullying involvement. The chapter reviews the theories used to address cyberbullying in clinical practice and highlights how the couple and family technology framework assists therapists in conceptualizing these cases, discusses how safety is created in cyberbullying cases, and presents the trajectory of treatment. It also reviews these concepts via a clinical application.
