ABSTRACT

This would be a great question to ask on Jeopardy: ‘‘What is a pe’a?’’ Or, more accurately, ‘‘What is a Samoan pe’a?’’ The pe’a is a sacred tatau, which is Polynesian for ‘‘tattoo,’’ often associated with the rite of passage for men. The sportswear giant, Nike, liked the design and incorporated it into their new product line. People from Australia and New Zealand were offended that this traditional art form was created for women’s leggings-something that is only allowed for men (Ehrbar, 2013).
