ABSTRACT

In dreams, the self-organizing system properties search for optimal harmony within high-level personality dynamics under the given circumstances. The frequency of sharp peaks and low hills varies for different types of dreams. In especially meaningful “peak experience” dreams, the energy seems to activate higher levels of self-organization while the experienced self simultaneously feels recharged with energy and finds the gusto to jump into new life projects. Dream series provide excellent opportunities to follow how peak experiences are built up, and how high-order personality changes can subsequently be integrated into an individual’s life in a harmonious way. Important dreams mediate contact to the gods and the spirits of the ancestors, and provide societies with omens of impending catastrophes or new opportunities. As C. G. Jung understands it, archetypes – the foundations of big dreams – have dynamic qualities. Peak experience dreams especially occur during critical phases in life.
