ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the services that have been evaluated and are available to individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), and give recommendations on how eHealth can enrich the work in the biopsychosocial functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) clinics. Research on individuals with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) indicates that the majority of patients have used the Internet as a source of medical information and more than half would turn to it for information about their condition. Currently there is an abundance of information and treatment recommendations in relation to FGIDs on the Internet; however, very few are supported by medical organizations. Recent research suggests that psychological treatments for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be delivered over the Internet. Zia and colleagues explored using an app to self-monitor IBS symptoms and food intake in a sample of some IBS patients.
