ABSTRACT

This chapter approaches the overlapping of fairy tale and science fiction in film from three points of departure. First it examines the use of fairy-tale material in science fiction films in terms of their shared investment in fantasy and myth. Next it takes up questions about commercially motivated imitation and the generation of fairy-tale and science fiction franchises. Finally, it raises some questions about how the role of spectacle and the use of special effects establishes a common ground for the two forms.
