ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the artistic representations of the goddesses in Nepali traditional paintings. I took interest in the area while Dr. Yama Sharma was conducting doctoral research under my supervision. We used to engage in long discussions on the subject of early Nepali paintings. I owe my knowledge of the subject to his research too. In the earliest Nepali art forms, the representations of the goddesses can be found in the paintings of the illuminated manuscripts. Many of the illuminated texts have philosophical contents; some have elements of ritualism.
