ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how impact can be pursued outside the groves of academe, given the right attitude to opportunities, some perseverance, and good temper. The research in question focused on language policy in Wales, a field that has been significantly bolstered in strength and scope by political devolution within the UK. The very first piece of primary legislation passed by the newly empowered Assembly was the Welsh Language Measure 2011, centring on promotion of Welsh in a range of domains. Language policy in Wales over the last decade has been guided by major flag-ship policy documents – published in light of legislation – that set out what is to be done in practice. In terms of Welsh language policies, for a text to reflect the constitutive ideology would be to assert that promoting Welsh would bolster Welsh identity. There are opportunities for private consultancy, for example in language-in-education.
