ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the challenges, transformation, roles and strategy of Asosiasi Pengusaha Indonesia (APINDO) which has found substantial momentum since the unfolding of Asian Crisis. It elaborates the organizational context such as relationship between APINDO and its 'superior' body, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN). The chapter explores the adaptive strategy and leadership of APINDO to keep it afloat during changing Indonesian and global economic, political and social situation, particularly over the past decade. APINDO has to maintain good communication and networking with trade unions across all levels. In this regard, three main issues call for urgent attention, especially those with interests which intersect with those of trade union movement; these are: minimum wage fixing – the main issue in Tripartite consultation institution, workers' social insurance, particularly under the new Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (BPJS) system and management; dispute resolution; and development of bipartite institution to address the uneasy 'partnership' with trade unions.
