ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights common challenges to work-life balance faced by mental health professionals, and helps readers to identify ways to integrate their work, family, and personal lives in a private practice setting. It helps individuals to determine what work-life balance means to them through assessment of personal values. The chapter addresses psychosocial and logistical issues that may contribute to the perception of balance in the private practice world. It helps providers in all different stages of career and life identify how to make private practice work for them. The chapter advices on self-care strategies, the benefits of social support, and explores tips for the management of work-related activities. It focuses on the more concrete terminal values. A flexible schedule allows one to work around variables like spouse work schedules, children's school or childcare needs, time demands from other employment, medical and other personal appointments, and other personal factors.
