ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that knowledge and its transformation is a key dynamic in our understanding of how news stories and media products can be viewed, particularly in the social media age. It discusses how knowledge regarding language and media is generated and shared among four key groups whose livelihood in some way rests with journalism: news practitioners, journalism educators, researchers, and the media audience. The chapter focuses on these journalism "stakeholders" and the dynamic of creating, sharing, and also discusses knowledge that is created through the news story or media text. It examines key concepts pertaining to knowledge transformation are defined and outlines basis for understanding the knowledge dynamic in journalism. The chapter presents several paradigms that conceptualize knowledge and knowledge sharing between the journalism "stakeholders". It highlights how knowledge transformation is another way to view the process of change in the media world, and suggests questions for reflection for the some stakeholder groups.
