ABSTRACT

The process of introducing sustainability criteria into regional development can take many directions. This chapter describes how existing work on one key issue – ecological resilience in biodiversity hot spots – can also accommodate and benefit from a broader initiative on tourism development. Such work with multiple outcomes is greatly assisted by modern evaluation techniques such as natural resource accounting, environmental footprints and life cycle costing. These assist scientists, funders, and the broader population to better understand the interconnections between nature conservation and regional development.
