ABSTRACT

Malia is an 18-year-old Part-Hawaiian woman who came from a small plantation town. She attended the local high school where she did well academically and was preparing to take her Scholastic Aptitude Tests with future plans to enroll in the state university. Malia would be the fi rst person in both her immediate and extended family to go to college. Although Malia did well academically she was concerned about how her family would aff ord tuition even with fi nancial aid.
