ABSTRACT

A 70-year-old woman was brought for an evaluation of depression by her son. She was from a small town in Punjab, India but had been living with her son in the United States for the past year, since the death of her husband of 52 years. Four years prior to her husband’s demise, her mother-in-law, whom she had nursed for nine years, died. The patient had always been an anxious woman, who felt obligated to care for her mother-in-law even though it was very stressful. After her motherin-law’s death, she started spending more time with her three daughters in India. She was afraid that her children would abandon her. She was also concerned about the well-being of her only son, who had resided in the United States for many years with his Indian wife. Finally, her son brought her to the United States to live with him.
