ABSTRACT

A fi rst-generation Japanese American woman was married to a Caucasian American man. The wife’s father had recently died and her 78-year-old mother was having diffi culty living alone, related to mild cognitive impairment. The wife felt strongly about having her mother move in with her and her husband. The wife described her husband as being a very assertive businessman who prided himself on never being dependent on others and sometimes being selfi sh. The husband insisted that his mother-in-law be placed in a nursing home. The wife accused the husband of being too narcissistic and wanted him to see a psychotherapist. The husband refused and he said he would consider divorce if his wife pursued this issue.
