ABSTRACT
This chapter1 outlines some of the key themes that played a significant role in the development of the Indian Army for more than 100 years of its existence. In order to understand the strains that became evident when India and Pakistan became independent, it is first necessary to understand how the Indian Army had developed since the late 18th century and how it was recruited, trained and organised up to 1947.
