ABSTRACT

Arabic has been a language with a global reach beyond the Arab Middle East and North Africa, where it is natively spoken. Motivations for learning Arabic are mounting across many academic disciplines and occupational domains, heralding unprecedented need for creating and teaching courses with specialized content. This chapter offers a brief overview of selected representative instructional materials for teaching and learning Arabic across various specific disciplines in order to shed light on the developments that have taken place until now. It examines the current challenges facing Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP) and offers some recommendations for further progress in ASP, which is growing in a wide range of domains. In spite of the challenges, there is great potential for further development within ASP. To facilitate their attainment, some possible steps such as: needs analysis of stakeholders, genre analysis of recurrent structures, norms and values; as well as case study research and classroom debates should be considered.
