ABSTRACT
Over the years I have photographed and sketched agricultural buildings in rural landscapes that stand out as icons in the historical role of agriculture, reflecting ancient connections between humans, animals, and landscapes in the development of rural culture. In America the image of an Amish farmer plowing a field near his farmstead in Lancaster, Pennsylvania is a clear reminder of the historic working relationship between humans, horses and machinery on farms all over the country (Figure 4.1).
