ABSTRACT

When mankind first developed the skills to grow plants and raise animals for food and fiber, a revolutionary change in human settlement took place. With the advent of farming an entirely new way of life emerged. In hunting and gathering societies people were always moving around pursuing food, but with farming people stayed in one place and worked with the land. No longer required to constantly relocate to find enough to eat, the early farmers selected a site for growing food, domesticated animals to help them in their work, and designed structures to protect themselves from the elements and others for storage. It began a new human relationship with animals and the landscape.
