ABSTRACT

While there are many types of sacred natural sites in Bhutan, including those of other beliefs and traditions (Hindu and Bön sites, including localised folk practices), this chapter focuses on Buddhist Nye. While there are subtle differences between Nye (special places attributed to enlightened Masters), Guru Nye (places attributed to Guru Rinpoche), Beyul (hidden lands) and other sacred natural sites, the word Nye is used in this chapter as it resonates most with the people of Bhutan.
