ABSTRACT

Smartphones are devices that provide advanced computing capabilities and connectivity offering immense benefits to diverse users. A global trend that is presently happening is a rise in the older adult population. Currently, research on smartphone adoption among older adults is limited. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the adoption level patterns of smartphones within the United Kingdom’s older adult population. For this purpose, a conceptual framework based on UTAUT, DoI, and Perceived Enjoyment from TAM was developed. An online survey completed by North London households was analyzed using SEM-PLS. The results revealed that Perceived Enjoyment was the strongest adoption factor followed by performance expectancy, compatibility, facilitating conditions, and effort expectancy. Moreover, education and experience were identified as the moderating adoption variables. The contributions of this research are the identification and understanding of the factors that encourage or inhibit smartphone use within the older adult population. This knowledge can assist future researchers to identify ICTs that can assist in reducing social isolation within the older adult population.
