ABSTRACT

Although course of events certainly places a person with mental illness (PwMI) at risk for further penetration in the traditional justice system, it also moves the individual further along in the Sequential Intercept Model. This chapter includes the screening and assessment for the risk of suicide/self-harm in secure confinement. It provides some detail with regard to the application and evaluation of several diversion strategies, such as screening and assessment by correctional staff and the effectiveness of system integration in the development of effective jail diversion programming. Perceived choice refers to a participant's feelings and attitudes toward their involvement in diversion programming/mental health treatment. Assertive community treatment model of care uses a team-based community approach to supporting PwMI by focusing on continuity of treatment, decreasing hospitalizations, and enhancing social and emotional functioning.
