ABSTRACT

It’s so good to be back, even if only for a day-I can’t quite say among the living, since I’ve spent most of the day in the library. But I’m especially grateful for the restoration of my sense of sight, and I marvel at the skills of the translators, who have given me access to the thoughts of so many who came after me. What marvelous machinery, to display vast treasuries of thought almost instantly. My brief, I understand, is to refl ect on consciousness-almost, in e ect, to refl ect on a refl ection. I hope I won’t be caught in some new infi nite regress, as if standing between facing mirrors.
