ABSTRACT

This chapter examines recent developments in, and emerging priorities for, SEA research and capacity development. It is based on discussions held at a panel session during the second IAIA meeting on SEA (Prague, 2011) and on issues raised in the SEA literature. The main objectives of the panel session were to consider how SEA concepts, methodologies and practices have improved and been extended through research and capacity development activities, and to identify outstanding and emergent issues that need to be addressed. Within this context, a number of questions were delineated to stimulate debate:

What is the state of the art in SEA research?

To what extent does capacity development reflect state of the art SEA knowledge?

What are the emerging priorities for the future development of SEA?

What does the SEA community want from future research? and,

What should the SEA research and capacity development agendas consist of in the future?
