Many non-experts’ views do not reflect the consensus expert view on climate science, and, typically, non-experts’ prior political commitments predict their views on climate science. After setting out a general model of how non-experts learn from experts in general, this chapter considers two explanations for “politically patterned” denialism: “manufactured dissent” about climate science; and a value-laden interpretation of evidence. It concludes by noting some more general problems for establishing robust trust in climate science.
