ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of research on physical education teachers’ career stages and socialization, with a particular emphasis placed on the development and foci of the literature over time. Literature pertaining to socialization that occurs throughout the career cycle, from induction into the field of physical education to career exit, guides this chapter. Additionally, readers will come to better understand the various career stage and career phase models developed to help quantify the paths of teachers’ occupational lives. Finally, an outline of the current literature will identify what is yet to be thoroughly explored and provide a preview to the following chapters within this book related to the future of research on physical education teacher socialization.
