ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the 'Catalonia' that is the Catalan Autonomous Community (CAC) in the north-east of Spain, an area which like the Basque country has had a historically difficult relationship with the Spanish state. Before discussing how maps have been used in Catalan identity construction, the chapter presents a brief overview of how maps have been used in Catalonia and similarly in Basque Country as tools of national identity expression. The chapter describes a history of how these units were developed in both Spain and Catalonia, contrasting the externally imposed provincial system with the Catalan-developed system of comarques and vegueries. It argues that maps are a means of identity creation and construction, specifically in relation to the activity of 'excursionisme', where Catalans use specific food maps to travel and eat on their way through Catalonia.
