ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of key concepts of the book. Part I of the book draws together the narratives of sustainability and surfing couched within the broader discussions of a risk society. Part II contains a single contribution from Steve Martin and Danny O'Brien. Part III continues to explore the complexity of the relationship between sustainability and surfing, applying a critical lens to technological advancement in different contexts. Part IV moves the debates of sustainability and surfing forward with an emphasis on activism, political advocacy and the relationship of various actors or knowledge exchange and the creation of effective policies. Part V presents chapters that in some form explore the reconceptualisation of surfing spaces. Opening the discussion Lindsay Usher explores the relationship between localism and sustainability. Overall the book provides an initial foundation on which future research on sustainability and surfing can be taken forward, which includes theory, methodology, empirical evidence, practical application, and the relationship between these elements.
